Best Mexican restaurant, pasta sauce, cutest puppy: Complete list of Cleveland’s Best winners 2019 - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio – As each year comes to a close it’s natural to take a few minutes to reflex on all the best moments this past year has brought us.

Here at cleveland.com it is no different.

Cleveland’s Best reporters Brenda Cain and Yadi Rodriguez have brought readers everything from the best brewery to the cutest puppy and tastiest fries on the North Coast throughout 2019.

We’ll be back in 2020 to search out more of the best Greater Cleveland has to offer. As we get ready to look at 2019 in the rearview mirror we’ve gathered all of this year’s winners from Cleveland’s Best contests.

BEST BREWERY

Cleveland's Best Brewery

Four judges chose Saucy Brew Works as the best local brewery.

Our panel of intrepid beer connoisseurs hit the road early in 2019 in search of Greater Cleveland’s Best Brewery.

Our readers nominated 75 of their favorite pubs, then voted 15 into the finals before reporters Marc Bona, Hayden Grove and Seth Richardson and certified beer judge Andrew Mitchell smelled, swirled and tasted craft beers before ultimately choosing Saucy Brew Works as Northeast Ohio’s Best Brewery.

BEST MEXICAN RESTAURANT

What’s a great beer without great food to go with it?

This time Rodriguez and Cain, along with Cleveland’s Best manager Kristen Davis, put their taste buds to the test in search of the best Mexican restaurant in The Land.

Best Mexican Restaurant

Blue Habanero is located on Detroit near Gordon Square.

Taste testing chips and salsa, street tacos and tasty specialties – as well as margaritas – prepared in cantinas across seven counties all led to the then 6-month-old Mexican eatery Blue Habanero in Gordon Square being crowned at the Best Mexican Restaurant.

FAST FOOD RANKINGS

Best Fast Food Options

We hit every major fast food chain and tried all entrees they had in common to determine what your best choices may be.

Rodriguez and Cain hit the road again in early summer to visit 24 fast food outlets, where they conducted a taste test of foods common to the menus. Check out the rankings of fries, sandwiches, salads, milkshakes and more to see who offers the best in each category.

BEST CONCESSION FOODS AT INDIANS & BROWNS GAMES

What's 'best' at Cleveland stadiums?

We tasted all concessions at Progressive Field and at First Energy Stadium to see what is your best option on game day.

What do fans at Progressive Field and FirstEnergy Stadium have to look forward to when hunger pulls them away from the action on the field. Cain and Rodriguez tasted the best sellers – along with offerings that caught their attention – and ranked them best to worst for Indians and Browns fans.

Cavaliers and Monsters fans: We plan a taste test of the concessions at the new Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in early 2020. Look for the rankings at cleveland.com/best.

BEST GROCERY STORE PASTA SAUCE

Overwhelmed by the number of jar sauces out there?

We tasted 174 pasta sauces. This one - we agreed - is best.

Want to indulge in a steaming plate of pasta but don’t have the time to simmer a pot of sauce all day, only to find you’re overwhelmed by the sheer number of sauces on your grocer’s shelves? No worries. We’ve got you!

We spent months shopping for, sampling and ranking 174 pasta sauces available at all the major grocery chains in Greater Cleveland. Find out which sauces had the best flavor.

BEST GROCERY STORE GUACAMOLE

As Browns season neared, our thoughts turned to game-time snacks, so we returned to the grocery stores to find out which of 44 guacamole dips is the best.

CUTEST PUPPY CONTEST

Meet Pepper, a 3-month-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi who lives in Broadview Heights with her owner, Holly Marcinowski. Pepper loves meeting new people (especially kids), playing with her dog cousin, Jack, and relaxing on the couch with her family. Photo courtesy of Holly Marcinowski.

Our appetites sated, we needed to have our souls fed – with wet noses and soulful eyes – so we went in search of Northeast Ohio’s cutest puppy. We asked our pet parent readers to nominate their puppy and held an epic photo event on the shores of Lake Erie. Pepper was declared the cutest puppy on the North Coast.

Cat lovers: Get ready, we’ll be in search of the Cutest Kitten in 2020. Stay tuned to cleveland.com/best to learn how to enter.

BEST BROWNS TAILGATERS

Tailgating is a sport too!

Who throws the best pre-game party? Find the best tailgaters with our guide.

It’s no secret Cleveland Browns fans are some of the best in the nation, and that they turn out en masse for the food, drinks and camaraderie in tailgate parking lots surrounding FirstEnergy Stadium before the games.

All of them welcome visitors – even fans from opposing teams – but who throws the best tailgate party? See our winning group.

MORE WINNERS

We also partnered with crowd-sourced business directory Yelp Cleveland this year. Yelp Cleveland identified businesses in our chosen category, then ranked those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews. The lists looked at businesses in our seven-county coverage area (Cuyahoga, Summit, Medina, Lorain, Lake, Geauga and Portage).

Finally, we took to Google reviews and sorted county lists in these three categories:

Ranking best outdoor pools in Greater Cleveland communities according to Google reviews

Ranking Greater Cleveland’s best fall activities

Celebrate National Pierogi Day with Cleveland’s 13 best pierogi (rankings)
